What is Spirituality?
Subscribe to my RSS feed Who hasn't pondered, "What is spirituality?"Originally, spirituality gave birth to religious practices, which led to organized religions, supposedly all of which were geared to being "one with", or experiencing, the essence of Divinity or Source, or whatever name one may choose. Is this a Definition of Spirituality? So, what IS spirituality? I suspect one of the inherent challenges to defining spirituality is that many are drawn to spirituality, or even religion, to solve a pressing problem, and from then on, from an experiential level, it is used for problem solving. However on a mental level, words - minus the experience of the word - are thrown about, like "love", "happiness", "peace", etc. . . or religious doctrine and dogma become the focus with love, happiness, peace, etc. . . as the promise of obeying correctly.Having worked within the organized and unorganized religious communities and also the spiritual communities, which are three separate circles, I get the idea, and there may be some others out there, but I have met very few people who were drawn to religion or spirituality to simply improve their life unless they had a pressing problem to begin with. My belief is, this is more prominent within religious communities, for it seems the spiritual communities have grown out of dissatisfaction with religion. And yet those who have moved into the spiritual community have brought unconscious patterns that were established long before in religious or other structured communities. (NOTE: I am using the term "Religion" in a broad sense here to include any organized group that acknowledges a higher power by any name.) As far as I can tell the process is something like this, the pull or draw of spirituality causes some to try and organize spirituality. This is recognized as Religion. As spirituality continues to call/draw/pull, some move to less organized religion or what would be termed spiritual communities. From there, as the call/draw/pull continues, it moves more into the level of organism and less organization. If it is a truth that spirituality is alive, this process makes useful sense, since organization will kill an organism. One is living and one is a non-living structure. When we consider "What is Spirituality?" on one level, possibly the highest level, we could say everything is spirituality. When we move to the next level down where division exists, when we ask, "What is Spirituality?" we might say, "It is alive", and by saying this everything that is dead is not a part of spirituality. We could go on and on with different levels and layers.
